- Versatile for Any Occasion: While it’s an absolute must for movie nights, chocolate popcorn is also perfect for parties, sleepovers, game nights, or even as a unique homemade gift. Pack it in decorative bags or jars for a thoughtful present.
- Fully Customizable: This recipe serves as an excellent base for various customizations. Experiment with different types of chocolate, add extra toppings, or adjust the amount of salt to perfectly suit your preference.
- Better Than Store-Bought: Making your own ensures fresh ingredients and allows you to control the quality of the chocolate and the amount of salt, resulting in a superior product that often surpasses anything you can buy in stores.
Essential Ingredients for Your Sweet Treat
Creating this delectable chocolate drizzled popcorn requires just a handful of basic ingredients. The measurements are provided in the full recipe card below, but here’s what you’ll need and some tips for choosing the best quality:

- Olive Oil: A good quality olive oil provides a neutral base for popping and can handle higher temperatures. Alternatively, for a slightly different flavor profile, you could use coconut oil, which adds a subtle richness that complements the chocolate beautifully.
- Popcorn Kernels: The fresher the kernels, the better the pop! Look for high-quality, unpopped kernels. Standard butterfly kernels work perfectly for this recipe, offering a light, airy texture with plenty of nooks and crannies for the chocolate to cling to.
- Milk or Dark Chocolate: This is where you can truly personalize your snack.
- Milk Chocolate: For a sweeter, creamier, and more classic flavor, milk chocolate is a fantastic choice that many find comforting.
- Dark Chocolate: If you prefer a richer, slightly bitter contrast to the sweet popcorn and desire a more sophisticated taste, opt for dark chocolate (50-70% cocoa solids works wonderfully).
- White Chocolate: For a different aesthetic and a sweet, creamy alternative, white chocolate can also be used, or even combined with milk or dark chocolate for a stunning marbled effect.
Make sure to use good quality chocolate chips, chunks, or a bar that you chop yourself. Higher quality chocolate melts more smoothly and sets better.
- Salt: A fine-grain sea salt is ideal for sprinkling over the finished product. Its delicate crystals adhere well to the chocolate and popcorn, providing that crucial burst of saltiness without being overpowering. Avoid coarse rock salt, which might be too intense.
Mastering the Art of Popcorn Popping
While you can use any method to pop your popcorn, mastering the stovetop technique ensures the freshest, fluffiest base for your chocolate drizzle. Here’s a detailed guide:
Stovetop Popping: The Gold Standard
This method yields perfectly popped kernels with excellent flavor and texture:
- The Test Kernels: Begin by heating your chosen oil (olive or coconut) in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. To determine when the oil is ready, add just two popcorn kernels to the pan. Cover the saucepan and patiently wait for these two kernels to pop. This might take several minutes, and that’s perfectly normal. Their pop signals that the oil has reached the ideal temperature for popping the rest of your batch.
- Adding the Remaining Kernels: Once the test kernels have popped, remove the saucepan from the heat immediately. Pour in the remaining popcorn kernels. Cover the saucepan tightly and give it a good, vigorous shake to ensure all the kernels are evenly coated with the hot oil. This crucial step helps them to heat uniformly, leading to fewer unpopped kernels.
- The Main Pop: Return the saucepan to medium heat. You’ll soon hear the popping begin. Continue to gently shake the pot at regular intervals throughout the popping process. This prevents kernels from sitting still on the hot bottom of the pan, which can lead to burning, and ensures every kernel has a chance to pop. As a bonus, it’s a great little arm workout!

Once the popping sounds slow down to several seconds between pops, remove the saucepan from the heat. Don’t wait until the popping stops completely, as residual heat can quickly burn the last few kernels. Carefully pour the freshly popped popcorn onto a large baking tray lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. This allows it to cool slightly and provides a perfect surface for the chocolate drizzling.

Alternative Popping Methods
While stovetop popcorn offers superior flavor, feel free to use other methods if they suit your preference or time constraints:
- Air Popped Popcorn: For a lighter, virtually fat-free base, an air popper is an excellent choice. This method produces very fluffy popcorn, which is perfect for absorbing chocolate.
- Microwave Popcorn: If convenience is key, a bag of microwave popcorn can work. However, opt for a plain variety to avoid overpowering flavors and extra butter that might interfere with the chocolate.
- Pre-Popped Popcorn: For the ultimate shortcut, you can even use good quality pre-popped, unflavored popcorn. Just ensure it’s fresh and not stale for the best results.

The Magic of Melting Chocolate
Melting chocolate can seem daunting, but with the right technique, it’s incredibly simple. The goal is a smooth, glossy consistency perfect for drizzling.
- Microwave Method (Easiest): Break your chocolate into small, uniform pieces or use chocolate chips. Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high power in short intervals, typically 20-30 seconds, stirring thoroughly after each interval. It’s crucial not to overheat the chocolate, as it can seize or burn. Continue microwaving and stirring until the chocolate is almost entirely melted and smooth. Even if a few small lumps remain, the residual heat from the bowl and the already melted chocolate will typically smooth them out with continued stirring.
- Double Boiler Method (More Control): For a gentler melt, place your chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water (ensure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water). Stir constantly until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth. This method provides more control and reduces the risk of burning.
Always ensure your bowl and utensils are completely dry when melting chocolate, as even a tiny drop of water can cause the chocolate to seize and become grainy.

Drizzling and Setting Your Chocolate Popcorn
Now for the fun part – transforming your popcorn into a chocolate masterpiece!
- The Drizzle: Using a fork, spatula, or spoon, generously drizzle the melted chocolate over the spread-out popcorn on your baking tray. Don’t be shy!
- Even Coating: For best results, give the popcorn a gentle stir or two after the initial drizzle. This helps to distribute the chocolate more evenly, ensuring that not all the chocolate ends up on the top layer and that those kernels at the bottom get some love too. Then, drizzle again! Aim for a good, consistent coating without completely saturating every single kernel.
- Salt Sprinkle: Immediately after drizzling, lightly sprinkle a pinch of fine sea salt over the wet chocolate. This ensures the salt adheres beautifully and enhances that sweet and salty dynamic.
- Setting the Chocolate: Once adequately drizzled and salted, set the tray aside to dry. This can be done at room temperature, which typically takes about 30-60 minutes depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. If you’re impatient (we totally get it!), you can pop the tray into the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes to speed up the setting process.
- Enjoy! Once the chocolate has fully set and hardened, break up any larger clumps if desired. This makes it easier to serve and eat. Then, it’s time to dig in and enjoy your homemade, irresistible Chocolate Drizzled Popcorn!

Expert Tips for Perfect Chocolate Drizzled Popcorn
Here are some additional tips to ensure your chocolate popcorn turns out perfectly every time and to inspire you to get creative:
- Achieve Even Chocolate Coverage: As mentioned, don’t just drizzle and walk away! Stirring the popcorn once or twice as you drizzle the melted chocolate will help ensure that almost every kernel gets a delicious coating, preventing a sad, plain bottom layer.
- Experiment with Chocolate Blends: For an extra layer of decadence and visual appeal, consider using a combination of chocolates. Drizzle with dark chocolate first, let it partially set, then add a drizzle of white chocolate for a beautiful marbled effect. Milk, dark, and white chocolate can all be used in tandem.
- Speedy Setting for Impatient Snacking: If the craving hits hard and you can’t wait for the chocolate to dry at room temperature, simply transfer the baking tray to the fridge for 10-15 minutes. The cooler temperature will help the chocolate firm up much faster.
- Any Popcorn Base Works: While stovetop popcorn is recommended for freshness, feel free to use air-popped, microwave, or even store-bought pre-popped popcorn as your base. The key is to ensure it’s plain and unsalted before adding the chocolate and your own salt.
- Optimal Storage: Chocolate drizzled popcorn is truly best enjoyed fresh, once the chocolate has fully dried and hardened. However, if you have any leftovers (a rare occurrence!), store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days to maintain its crunch and flavor.
- Fun Variations and Toppings: Get creative! Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle your popcorn with extras like colorful sprinkles for a festive touch, chopped nuts (peanuts, almonds, pecans) for added crunch, crushed candy canes for a holiday treat, or even a dash of cinnamon or chili powder for an unexpected twist.
- The Right Salt Matters: For that perfect sweet and salty balance, fine sea salt is usually best. Its small crystals disperse evenly and provide a consistent flavor. Flaky sea salt can also be used for a more intense, textural salty burst.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp. Olive Oil
- ½ cup Popcorn Kernels
- ¼ cup Milk or Dark Chocolate, or more to taste
- Salt, to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil and two popcorn kernels in a saucepan on medium heat. Cover the saucepan and wait for the kernels to pop. This can take several minutes and that’s ok. Be patient. When they pop, you know you’re ready to go!
- Add the rest of the kernels in and cover the saucepan. Remove from heat immediately and give the saucepan a good shake to mix the kernels with the oil. Return to heat and wait for the popping to begin.
- Shake the pot at regular intervals to ensure all the kernels are popping and none get burnt. There’s a bonus arm workout here.
- When the popping stops, remove from heat and pour onto a tray.
- Add chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl (if it’s a block, break it up first) and microwave on high in 20 second intervals, stirring well each time, until melted and smooth.
- Using a fork, spatula or spoon, drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of the popcorn. Give the popcorn a good stir one or two times and drizzle again to ensure it’s coated evenly.
- Set aside to dry. When it’s ready, break up any clumps if desired and enjoy!
Notes
- Stir the popcorn around a few times as you drizzle the chocolate over it so that you don’t end up with a bunch of popcorn that is missed in the bottom.
- You could definitely do a combination of white and milk or dark chocolate for an extra indulgent treat.
- If you’re impatient and can’t wait for the popcorn to dry at room temperature you can throw it in the fridge for 10 minutes to firm up.
- Feel free to use air popped popcorn or even pre-popped popcorn to drizzle chocolate over if you’d prefer.
- I think chocolate drizzled popcorn is best enjoyed immediately once the chocolate has dried, however, it can be stored for a few days in an airtight container.
